Make Up Tutorial

June 27, 2008 by alettertobecca

For my first tutorial, I’m going to show you the easiest way to add or edit make-up, in a few easy steps. First, you’re going to need to choose your photo. Make sure it’s not too blurry, otherwise it may be hard to edit. You can use the sharpen tool to sharpen the photo by going to the top toolbar and choosing ‘Filter’ and then selecting ’sharpen.’ Also make sure in your photo, the face you’re going to be applying makeup too is not too small.

Above is the photo I chose to edit.

To start, go to the layer’s pallette normally located on the bottom right hand side of your PS workspace. Click the ‘New layer’ button, as shown below:

 New layer

The button with the red circle around it is the new layer button, for those who don’t know.

Once you’ve done that, the next step will be to go to your new layer, and start editing. A circular brush is recommended. Also make sure your brush is at 100% opacity. The most popular places to apply make-up are the eyes, lips and cheeks.

After you’ve applied your make-up, it should look very unnatural; And basically like a very bad editing job. Mine looked like this:

Next, you’re going to change the type of layer. The new layer you made and did all your changes on can be changed to make the layer look different. Go to the layers pallette on the bottom right hand corner of your screen and make sure that you have selected the new layer (most will be called ‘Layer 2′). Find where it says “Normal” and click that; a list should appear that looks like this:

Select the “Soft Light” option. After you’ve selected that, the make-up should appear more natural and look along the lines like this:

If you still think the make-up is too heavily applied or if you want it to look a little bit more natural, simply play with the opacity level. Next to where you changed the layer to “Soft Light,” it should say “Opacity:” And have 100%. Click on ‘100%’ and a sliding bar will appear that will let you lower the layer’s opacity.

You can keep changing the opacity as much as you want until you’ve found the pefect amount. As you change the bar, the picture should be immediately affected and display what changes you are making.

I lowered mine down to 52%, and got a final result that looked like this:

If you place them side by side, you’ll see the changes you’ve made.
